You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar…

But what can you clean more with.. Vinegar! Why am I just now discovering the many wonderful uses of vinegar. It amazes me. I am buying this stuff in bulk lately, honestly. The other day, I added a cup of vinegar to a cup of water in a glass measuring cup, and microwaved it.. MY MICROWAVE HAS NEVER BEEN CLEANER! I swear. So this prompted me to make a list of all the wonderful things you can do with Vinegar.. this is what I have come up with..

  1. Adding a few tablespoons of white vinegar to the water when poaching eggs helps the whites stay formed. Add a few tablespoons to the water when boiling eggs, and if any shells crack, the whites won’t leak out.
  2. If your leafy veggies are wilted, soaking them in cold water with a little vinegar can perk them right up.
  3. After chopping an onion, you can eliminate the odor from your hands by rubbing them with a bit of white vinegar.
  4. When cooking any vegetables from the cabbage family (like broccoli or cauliflower), adding a little vinegar to the water will perk up the taste and reduce the gassiness.
  5. Clean and deodorize the garbage disposal by mixing equal parts vinegar and baking soda and putting it down the drain. After letting this fizzing mixture sit for a few minutes, flush out the drain with warm water for a clean and stink-free sink.
  6. One of my favorite vinegar remedies and my personal weapon against fruit flies is to set out a small dish of white vinegar and some smashed fruit, covered with plastic wrap with some holes in it–the flies crawl into the trap, but can’t get out.
  7. If your stemware is cloudy from the dishwasher, wrap the glasses in paper towels soaked in vinegar, let them sit, and the cloudy deposits will rinse right off.
  8. There’s no need to use bleach on tile grouting when you can let vinegar soak on it and then scrub with a toothbrush.
  9. Bring lightly scuffed or dirty DVDs back to life by wiping them down with some vinegar on a soft cloth
  10. If you have water condensation marks on your wood, just rub the piece of furniture with equal parts vinegar and vegetable oil to remove them. Make sure to rub with the grain, and then invest in a set of coasters.
  11. If a child has an “accident” on a mattress, clean it with a solution of vinegar and water. Afterwards, pour some baking soda onto the mattress, and brush or vacuum the residue once it’s dry.
  12. Spraying vinegar onto deodorant-stained shirts before the wash can remove the discoloration. It’s also great for fighting mustard, tomato sauce, or ketchup stains.
  13. Adding a cupful of vinegar to the rinse cycle of your washing machine can freshen up bright colors and give you cleaner laundry. Acetic acid won’t harm fabrics, but it dissolves the soap residue that can dull dark clothing. It also acts as a fabric softener, a static reducer, and a mildew-inhibitor.Vinegar will also loosen chewing gum stuck to car upholstery, rugs, and carpeting

The list can LITERALLY go on and on.. It’s an amazing substance. Recently I mixed it with a little Dawn dish soap and some warm water and cleaned the Captains crib.. it cleaned it, deodorized it and didn’t leave a film behind. AWESOME!

When I googled sayings about vinegar – the first one that came up was Full of piss and vinegar.. and although it made me laugh out loud, I didn’t find it terribly appropriate for the title of my post. However, when I went back to see what it exactly meant – I thought it sounded a bit like me: Rowdy, boisterous, full of youthful energy. And because I am a big ol nerd.. here’s the history of the term, Full of piss and vinegar:

The earliest citation I’ve found is from 1938 in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath:

Grampa walked up and slapped Tom on the chest, and his eyes grinned with affection and pride. “How are ya, Tommy?”
“O.K.,” said Tom. “How ya keepin’ yaself?”
“Full a piss an’ vinegar,” said Grampa.

There are other similar phrases that came before that which may be the source.

In 1922 Joyce has this in Ulysses – “All wind and piss like a tanyard cat.”

As far back as 1602, in Return from Parnassas – “They are pestilent fellowes, they speake nothing but bodkins, and pisse vinegar.”

Those earlier citations appear to indicate a more negative meaning to the phrase. ‘Wind and piss’, or as it is more often given ‘piss and wind’ is usually taken to mean empty talk, full of bombast. Vinegar is associated with sourness and acidity in many other citations. Peter B. Kyne’s 1922 novel They Also Serve includes what seems to be a straightforward polite alternative to ‘piss and vinegar’:

“He’s full of pep and vinegar and wild for exercise.”

Vinegar has been in the language as the name of the familiar liquid since the 12th century. During the 1920s vinegar was used to mean vitality and energy and that’s the meaning in ‘piss and vinegar’ and ‘pep and vinegar’. At that time many phrases indicating a general perkiness and vitality entered the language, often for no other reason than linguistic exuberance. It’s most likely that the phrase originated around then, possibly as an adaptation of the existing ‘vig and vigour’, which means much the same.

man, I am a nerd.

It’s Big Boy Bed Day!!

oh me oh my.. it’s big boy bed day!

I have been stressing about this for months. Since the day that the Captain crawled out of his crib, TWICE! And although he has not done it again, it stresses me out every night. I will admit that I realize that there are a whole lot of new stresses that will come with this new bed – but I think in the long run it will be best (oh I hope!!).

So the bed will be delivered today at 4 and when we get home, mommy will make the bed, and make a HUGE deal about sleeping in the big boy bed. There are a couple of books that I came across and wondered if I should buy them.. maybe I will put one on the nook – and start there. I so badly want this transition to go smoothly and him be excited about it. I’m pretty excited about it, although I am not totally sure why!

The Captain is at such a fun age right now. He remembers everything, repeats EVERYTHING, and loves his doggie (he’s sweet, Cole sweet), and outside. It’s so fun to watch him explore. His favorite toy you ask?? A stick. He likes to beat the tree with it. Just one tree. The one on the left – doesn’t pay attention to the other identical trees a foot away to his right..

In other fun news. Some changes are a brewin’.. and I am starting to get real excited. I will fill you in when everything is official. And no.. I am not pregnant!

Also, I am going to start exploring some DIY items featured on Pinterest. I am really interested in the cost comparison and length of time it takes to make some of this stuff. The thing I am having trouble doing is determining how much my time is worth. Meaning I will need to take into account – how much time it takes me to go to the store to purchase the laundry detergent vs. how much time it takes me to make it, plus the cost of everything. Any ideas?

I am going to start with some fun stuff. I really want to try one of the Lemoncello recipes, and the laundry detergent recipes. Is there anything you would like to see me try? I will review everything in detail, and if you suggest one – I will send you a sample!

I am feeling crafty again… more to come!

So much on my mind..

So, my mind is racing 1 freaking million miles an hour.. and lucky for you – I have thoughts I want to share!
Is it dumb to turn the crib into the toddler bed – thus purchasing more bedding – rather than just moving him into a “big” boy bed (not yet — but in the near future — I’m a planner people) – and purchasing that bedding. It really all revolves around bedding. I’m not pregnant (tears in my coffee) – but hope to be soon, and when he or SHE arrives than I will move him into his big boy bed – so do I wait? Why is this such a dilemma? Oh – because I want to decorate. dumb. I have been obsessed with this bedding from PB Kids – it’s plaid – and adorable – and I just found it in toddler bedding also..

Look at the cute little guy bedroom. I love it.

Prydes of Old Westport

Yesterday, I wasn’t feeling well. Not only am I suffering from a terrible case of post nasal drip – but I was feeling extremely low and uncreative. So in order to give myself a little pick me up – I decided to go and wander around Prydes. I love Prydes – it’s crowed with stuff, sometimes it’s very expensive – sometimes it’s not. A little old lady offers you tea (which I happily accepted), and there’s so much to look at – and daydream about. I love expensive cooking tools – I love to cook! Having Thanksgiving at my house is a very exciting time for me. I can spend hours here. Unfortunately I only had about 40 minutes – so I wandered quickly. First upstairs with the gadgets, table runners and aprons. They have the largest All-Clad pot I have ever seen.. I picked up some local honey and some turkey timers – for $2! They had cute ones for $10 – but I went with the cheap! They have teas and cocoa – aprons and matching oven mits that are adorable and TONS of bake ware. Downstairs is full of glass and dinner ware – a huge room of Fiestaware – and a little pie shop called The Upper Crust. They have a room upstairs right when you walk in the door full of cookbooks – and I LOVE COOKBOOKS!  Anyway – if you’ve never been to Prydes – it’s worth the quick trip to Westport Road! It’s also a great place to buy me.. er anyone presents!  Here is a list of items that Pryde’s suggest for your Essential Kitchen – let’s see how many I own!

Food Processor – own
Standing Mixer – want
Blender – own

Bench Scraper – I don’t know what this is..
Grater/Zester – own
Pepper Mill – own
Fine-Mesh Strainer- want
Rubber Spatula – own
Tongs – own – one of my FAVORITE kitchen gadgets!!
Vegetable Peeler – own

Chef’s Knife, 8-inch – own
Paring Knife – own
Serrated Knife – own
Cutting Board – own

Ingredients – own
Temperature – we have a grill thermometer – I guess that counts
Time – own

So I am close – I think my current NEEDS are a standing mixer (Black I think) and a Dutch Oven..

On a more solemn note.. The news has been depressing the crap out me lately – it makes me scared to let the Captain out of my site. All this news about child molestation and these men that are supposed to be pillars of the community. It kills me. We rode our bikes and played out of site of our parents every damn day in the summer from dusk till dawn – and no one, NO ONE, thought anything about it. I spent countless days at the pool with my sister – and no parent around! I cannot imagine letting the Captain walk 2 blocks out of my site right now. The whole thought of not knowing where he is at every second scares the bejeesus out of me. I can’t read anymore of the Penn State mess – It makes me literally sick to my stomach to think that guy did that – and all those other cowherds covered it up. SICK I TELL YOU!

I try everyday to be a better mom than I was yesterday. He’s in a hitting/kicking stage – which is so fun – and it wears on my patience – but I can make him giggle like no one else can, and that makes me smile and giggle a little too. He loves his daddy more than anyone right now too – it’s so freaking cute! When hubs isn’t around he walks around the house, checks the office and says daddy?? It’s so cute.

That’s all for now.. I’m sure you’re relieved!
I think after work – I am going to SPEED to pick up my peanut and hug him tight!

Crafty, Captain A and some Beastie Boys

She’s crafty – she’s gets around
She’s crafty – she’s always down
She’s crafty – she’s got a gripe
She’s crafty – and she’s just my type
She’s crafty

Thank you Beastie Boys, you have highlighted so many good memories of my past.. and when I say the words crafty – you are who I think of!
Yeah, I’m not that kind of crafy! But I’d like to think that when I’m not being totally lazy – that I’m pretty crafty (in the good non-slutty way). I know I harp on how wonderful Pinterest is – it’s just so great, and not a time killer AT ALL (cough cough..)– if you don’t have an account – get one and pin some stuff! Seriously! It’s so addicting. So here are some projects that I want to do for fall.

1. Decorate the front door – now through Thanksgiving. I want it to look like this:

This image was posted on the Simplified Bee – but is a Pottery Barn image. I don’t think I am going to have to go to Pottery Barn to buy everything here – and will instead hit up Home Depot/Lowes, Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Wal-Mart – I think I should be able to find most of the items to recreate this.. I might skip the fake birds.. they kind of freak me out.

2. Department of Missing Socks. I think this is such a cute idea! I have a little wall in my laundry room that would be perfect – and it wouldn’t take long at all to do! Seriously, what is more frustrating then lost socks! I can’t bring myself to throw them away – so they pile up on my dresser until hubs or I freak out about them. This would be a really cute way to display them – and might give us a fighting chance to matching some.

This image was found on Rambling as Usual‘s blog. I found Say it with styles ETSY store that sold signs similar to this for $17. You could also stencil the sign or make your own cutout. Young House Love is giving away a Silhouette CAMEO digital cutter – having one of these would make so many projects SO much easier. If you go to the Silhouette Pinterest page  they have incorporated 2 of my favorite things.. CHALKBOARD & SIGNS – yep! Chalkboard Vinyl Signs – for organizational cubes! I could die. Now I really want one of these!

The Captain gets tubes this Friday. Say a little prayer for him (and for me).. everyone says it’s worse for the parents then for the kiddo, but somehow, that doesn’t make me feel better. The fear of the unknown is really what gets me every time I think about it. I have every confidence in our doc – it’s just still a bit scary. Glad hubs will be with me to calm me down.
We went to cheer on the Missouri Tigers this week, unfortunatley they lost to Oklahoma State – but it was a fun beautiful fall day – and we had a lot of fun! Alex ended the day with no pants, only 1 sock and a random hat on his head.. sounds like a good day to me!

An update to “The List” and some other random thoughts —

So a few weeks ago I made a list of things that I REALLY wanted to get done before the end of the year.. So I have decided that I need to revisit and update the list – so to hold myself more accountable. The list is below – and my progress would be a F if I was in school (thank goodness I am not!) … :

  • Bring my lunch to work and walk with the girls (stop eating out all the time!) – bringing my lunch is going a lot better then walking….
  • Sign up for a walk-a-thon of some sort – I have not done this yet.. but am still looking into it.
  • Use the entertainment coupon book, groupons and muncharoos – am doing very good at this – and am actually running out of groupons and muncharoos.
  • Sort out the details for Birds sprinkle (a baby shower – but small.. it’s for her 2nd child) – for another girl! Very excited about this – now just have to get it planned!
  • Be a smarter shopper – when shopping online – shop through shop at home or ebates, use coupons! – have yet to do this..
  • Purchase a few outfits for work that are, “for the position I want, not have” type outfits.. nope
  • Lose weight (I mean seriously – it’s ridiculous!) – 😦
  • Decorate: – nope
    entry from garage
    dining room
  • Hang photos and paintings in: some.. hung pics in the Captains bath and his room..
    Master bedroom/bath
    The Captain’s room
    Hall Bathroom
  • Dinner schedule (and stick to them for Pete’s sake!) – doing fairly well at this
  • Start Christmas shopping/crafting by October 1 – might still be able to get this done…

So I can’t mark anything off my list – but I am doing better at some of the items.. and that’s key – right? Pinterest helps me. I have some outfit ideas in my Things I want to wear folder, for home decor ideas I have For the Home and the Littles folders – and for Christmas shopping I have the Present Ideas folder – course most of the present ideas are ideas for me.. but the folder will continue to grow.

The year is over half way through! I can’t believe it.

Fall is always a very busy time for us.

We have season tickets to Mizzou football games, and try to attend as many as possible. The Hubs loves his Missouri Tigers, and I have grown very fond of Columbia (I mean it’s no Manhattan, KS – but the more I go, the more I love it just the same).  There are definite places that I like to go before and after games; Les Bourgeois,  Tropical Liquor, Booches (I want a t-shirt from there…). Football has not always been my thing.. but I enjoy it more today then I did, and the more I learn about it the more I enjoy watching it. I like listening to Mike Kelly do the play-by-plays.. he’s very good – and I love his voice!

There is just something amazingly charming about small college towns. There’s a true sense of community and everyone pretty much routes for the HOME team.. and college game days are the most fun! Restaurants are packed, the good ones anyway, everyone is happy and having fun. The name of the game is FUN on college football Saturdays. Hubs is always in such a wonderful mood! Needless to say, I look forward to football Saturdays. Hope the Captain loves them as much as we do – he kind of has no choice in the matter of attending, so hopefully he loves them!

So anyway, I have started a list of some things I would like to do to improve myself, my day-to-day life, and my home, in hopes of feeling more organized and energized (plus, saving money along the way would be the best feeling of all!) by the end of the year.

  • Bring my lunch to work and walk with the girls (stop eating out all the time!)
  • Sign up for a walk-a-thon of some sort
  • Use the entertainment coupon book, groupons and muncharoos
  • Sort out the details for Birds sprinkle (a baby shower – but small.. it’s for her 2nd child)
  • Be a smarter shopper – when shopping online – shop through shop at home or ebates, use coupons!
  • Purchase a few outfits for work that are, “for the position I want, not have” type outfits
  • Lose weight (I mean seriously – it’s ridiculous!)
  • Decorate:
    entry from garage
    dining room
  • Hang photos and paintings in:
    Master bedroom/bath
    The Captain’s room
    Hall Bathroom
  • Dinner schedule (and stick to them for Pete’s sake!)
  • Start Christmas shopping/crafting by October 1

These all seem doable in the remaining 17 or so weeks left in this crazy year! Wait, 17 weeks! Holy cow!
It’s almost labor day – pack those white pants away and be safe on this “last weekend of summer!”

My brain is going 1 million miles an hour….

So I am having one of those days, where my brain is racing faster then I can actually get it all accomplished. I blame the Captain, he woke up at 4:30 – and wanted to party.. hubs and I were both up pretty quickly after that! This was him on the way to daycare.. wish it was me..

But today’s post is going to focus (hopefully) on home improvements..

So hubs and I purchased a lovely house in October of 2010. I love my house, really I love it. It’s way too big for us and the Captain for now.. but I love it all the same. However, the longer I live in said lovely abode – the more I start to realize that there are rooms I really want to make over. Not rebuild or tear apart – just paint and add new lights maybe an accessory or two. The problem is that we did SO much to our old house to get it ready to sell, that I am having a hard time talking hubs into it. Plus, it costs money and time. For some reason the dining room has become my least favorite room in the house (I really wish I had a photo, but I don’t – maybe I will try and get one tonight…). So here is the list of things I would like to do:

  • Take the chair rail down
  • Make the doorway between the dining room and kitchen smooth. Currently, it still looks like a door should be hanging there
  • Fill in holes, sand, painting
  • New light
  • Artwork
  • New Curtain

Here is my inspiration for this room:

Obviously, there are things in all these rooms that I don’t want, or can’t have (brick wall) but a combination of these images would make me happy. Our kitchen is a mustard yellow with brown glaze finish (sounds kind of ugg.. but it’s not – it’s lovely.).. similar to this – but with textured plaster walls:

So I need to come up with a color for the dining room – I’m leaning towards a tealish blue color. The lights from image 2 – white washing the current table we have, and using dark velvety curtains (target has great ones).. maybe a dark purple or even black. I am in love with these types of signs – I found this on Etsy – and you can customize them. I saw a similar on in a local restaurant with Kansas City streets, and that’s what I want.
I would hang this on one of the east walls – and will either have my good friend paint me a painting or I will attempt to do the same for the North wall. So this finishes out the dining room.
The other rooms I would like to work on are the finishing touches to our bedroom, and the small kitchen off the bath. I am currently pulling ideas and pinning things to my Pinterest – I will post inspiration boards as soon as I have them. Hopefully we can talk the hubs into a couple small projects.

What projects are you working on?
